Significance of Jesus in 2001 Space Odyssey:
I think that the significance in the images of Christ is that in our calendars and many of the bible stories, birth of Christ is not only the most important occurrence, but also sometimes the occurrence that started it all, just as in the beginning of the movie it showed the dawn of men, the beginning and the most important occurrence of it all.
As well, when it gives reference to the Virgin Mary holding the dying Jesus, she's presenting a sacrifice of men to God, just as in the movie, but men is unwillingly giving his subjects to the new ruler, which are robots and computers.
When the spaceship lands and it shows the face of Jesus, it shows the pure power and authority of the spaceship in reference to the respect and superiority and the vastness of Jesus.
Finally, in the movie it says that there intelligent life in other worlds with the monolith and such. Humans started off as human Jesus and a God for humans and things like that, but maybe this new intelligent life are machines, and the pictures of Jesus and references to God are for them to start off their civilization too. And with the situation with Hal, there could be a possibility it's saying that this new civilization will defeat humans.
